Mark Joseph Solis, a University of the Philippines Graduate student submitted a photo which he claimed as his own in a photo contest, Smiles for the World, conceptualized by Chilean Ambassador Roberto Mayorga.
The photo won top prize and Solis was awarded $1,000 and round-trip tickets to Chile and Brazil in an event held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
It was later known that the photo submitted was stolen from Gregory John Smith's Flickr account which was originally named 'Neptune, King of the Sea'.
Gregory John Smith is the founder of the Children At Risk Foundation. He already expressed his disappointment and concern about the issue and asked for appropriate actions be taken immediately.
Caught in the act! Below is the letter of apology from Solis:
This is not the first time Solis committed such act of plagiarism as there are reported five more incidents where he submitted other people's works and claiming each to be his own.
According to Ambassador Mayorga, an investigation will be conducted regarding the matter and warned that Solis' award maybe forfeited.
